Japanese Ukiyo-e Art Print Poster Woodblock Wall Art Cats
UKIYO-E JAPANESE WOODBLOCK ART PRINT "Cats Suggested As The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido" by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, 1850. (center and right part of the triptych) This print is a playful spoof on Hiroshige's "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido"(1833-34), an impressive best-seller of the genre, enough so that even a decade on this ukiyo-e cat-pun print was still relevant! Whilst Hiroshige's works captured every post station of the Tokaido ('Eastern Sea Road') through various landscapes, Utagawa Kuniyoshi goes straight for wordplay and puns on the names of the stations, representing them with cats and their antics. The wordplay subtleties might be lost on a non-Japanese speakers, the cats can be certainly appreciated by anyone! - - Reproduced from an archive image, respectfully and lovingly restored and enhanced digitally, to remove the non-artistic blemishes and colour fading. - A3 print, 297mm x 420mm.
