In this dramatic scene the legendary hero Watonai Coxinga faces of with a tiger in the Bamboo Forest of a Thousand Leagues during his travels in China. He subdues the beast, aided by a charm from the Great Shrine of Ise. Watonai and the monstrous tiger then join forces to defeat a group of Chinese soldiers! This legend has been the subject of many Kabuki and Bunraku plays and is the basis of the popular drinking party game "Tora Tora Tora!! ("tora" means "tiger" in Japanese), that Maiko play with their guests. The image composition is stunning, with both opponents fixing their fierce eyes on each other, both bodies twisted in almost yin-yang like symmetry! - - Reproduced from an archive image, respectfully and lovingly restored and enhanced digitally, to remove the non-artistic blemishes and colour fading. - A3 print, 297mm x 420mm.
